Single key vs. two key Grapple
Ash tipped me on a major failing of single key grapples (the ones that switch to grapple and shoot via a single key) - you cannot time the release very precisely. I have changed my grapple configuration, so that when I hit the grapple key, it just switches to grapple and when I let go, it reverts back to the last weapon. I actually have to hit the fire button to shoot the grapple.
How does that help? Now I can switch to the grapple BEFORE I see my grapple target and release as soon as I see it. This makes flag carrier escapes much, much easier (actually, they are quite impossible with single key grapple because of the delay involved).
I found that I lost nothing by making this change but gained a lot. I can now hook up and escape from Q2CTF3 and make a very clean exit on Q2CTF2 - it might even help on Q2CTF1 (haven't tried yet). It just takes getting used to.
Here's how I configured it:
alias +grap "use grapple"
alias -grap "weaplast"
bind mouse2 +grap
I will probably use only those who can effectively make use of the grapple in escapes for offense.
Very, very good site covering defense. I'll incorporate the core of the info their into our tactical documents as time allows. For now, go and take a look. This is good stuff.
Grab the Tech!
The techs start at predetermined points - the first job of defense should be to rush out and grab the techs closer to the base. The techs that are farther out should be targeted by the offense. The starting positions can be found here.
Death From Above
Quoted from Dbi's page:
"Have you ever wondered why EVERY page tells you to never grapple yourself to a wall? Well there's a good reason for it. All the enemy has to do is lob a few explosives in yer direction and the wall will splash you to death. What good is hanging from a ceiling then? Why are the areas near the doors in some levels so high? This is more of a defense when you know somone is coming and want to confuse the hell out of them, NOT a stationary defense. When you go through the door, step to the side then grapple above the door, but do not switch weapons to anchor yourself, just hold it. When your prey goes through the door, drop behind them. This seals one exit and puts you behind them. Try to switch weps while you are falling so yer ready to split some skulls when your feet touch the ground. Though some consider it dishonorable to shoot someone in the back like this, I say a hit is a hit. I stress that you do not hang in one spot forever. You turn into a pinata and there's no candy inside this one."
